Nazaré is famous for waves the size of buildings – but after living here, we’ve fallen in love with the quiet corners most people miss: pine-scented forest roads, sea-sprayed cliff paths, and the kind of coastal peace that van travellers (and their dogs) crave. If you want to see that side of Nazaré, an e-bike rental might be your perfect ride.

So, is renting an e-bike in Nazaré worth it? And what’s the experience really like?

Here’s our honest review of hiring from E-Motion Nazaré – plus our favourite routes, pricing info, and a few helpful tips from the road.

Is E-Bike Rental in Nazaré Worth It?

If you’re only in town for a day, you’ll likely be happy exploring the historic centre, beach, and cliff top views on foot. But for a long weekend or if you’re travelling slowly (like us), renting an e-bike opens up a whole new side of this coastline.

We found hidden beaches, panoramic boardwalks, and trails we’d never have reached on foot – and we didn’t need to unhook the van or figure out parking on tiny side streets.

It’s the perfect in-between: faster than walking, simpler than driving, and way more fun than it has any right to be.

Renting from E-Motion Nazaré: What You Need to Know

We booked our bikes during that weird, timeless week between Christmas and New Year’s. It was a last minute, mid holiday decision so we were really pleased that E-Motion was able to fit us in!

The booking process was easy:

The bikes were well-maintained and comfortable – even on slight inclines and mixed gravel. Everything felt low-pressure, flexible, and friendly.

Who It’s Not For

To be clear: this isn’t for everyone. If you’re after a full day guided tour, they do offer that – but this post focuses on self-guided rides.

We wouldn’t recommend this rental if:

• You’re short on time and only plan to stay in central Nazaré
• You’re not physically able to cycle for a few hours (even with e-assist)
• You want extreme downhill tracks or mountain biking terrain (there are tracks for this – but their bikes aren’t suitable for them)

Why We Recommend It (Even to Other Locals)

We’ve lived here a while, and we even discovered new places on this ride. 

That says a lot.

Renting an eBike gave us the freedom to roam without the stress of traffic or figuring out where to park the van.

🚲 The Atlantic Road – Nazaré’s Best Kept Secret

Most people drive north from Nazare along the main roads – but there’s actually a coastal route, The Atlantic Road, that’s scenic on foot, bike or by car! 

So while most tourists visit Nazare for a quick stop at the lighthouse, if you plan a ride north along the Atlantic Road you’ll find a quiet, sea-hugging path through dunes, quiet beach towns and pine forests.

🧭 Route Notes:

• Follows a dedicated bike path – flat and easy
• We rode all the way to Pedrogão (2 hours), but you can shorten it if you want
• Great picnic stops and cafés along the way

• Farol Penedo da Saudade – lighthouse without the crowds
• Old Beach Club, São Pedro de Moel – relaxed lunch stop

🚲 São Martinho do Porto – Rugged But Worth It

São Martinho do Porto is the neighbouring town to Nazare, and often overlooked by tourists heading between Lisbon and Porto. However, with so many cafes to grab lunch in, and scenic routes to their lighthouse, it’s a great Nazare day trip choice.

The easiest route is this one that follows the road and takes roughly 50 minutes. There’s no cycle path, and it’s hilly in sections but it’s easy compared to the alternative.

If you fancy a more rugged route that will have you pushing the bike in sections? Take the back road to São Martinho do Porto. It has the same elevation of 200m as the easy route, but it’s mostly dirt track rather than tarmac road with deep sand patches and rocky terrain. The views, however? They make it worth it and you’re not having to watch for traffic. 

Google maps says it takes about an hour, but after doing the route ourselves I’d say it’s easily a couple of hours.

What to Do When You Arrive:

• Grab a coffee at a beachside café
• Let the dog off-leash along the bay
• Climb the dunes or walk out to the lighthouse for amazing views

How far can I ride an e-bike from E-Motion Nazaré?

While we’re still waiting on the official range, we did a full-day ride along the Atlantic Road, stopped for lunch, and explored inland trails – all without running out of battery.

As long as you’re not venturing much further than Pedrogão, you should be just fine. The bikes also come with chargers, so you can top up overnight if you’re doing a multi-day hire.

Updated! Here’s what Hugo has to say about the bikes battery life; battery range depends on a few factors like terrain, assistance level, and rider weight. That said, our 625Wh batteries typically offer up to 120 km of range, and our 750Wh batteries can go up to 150 km.

Nazare to Pedrogão is roughly 83km return – so there you go, you could go further if you really wanted to!

What if I need to cancel my booking?
