Thinking about road tripping Portugal in winter but wondering if it’s worth it?
After living in Portugal for over two years, we can confidently say it’s absolutely worth experiencing this beautiful country during the cooler months.
From quiet beaches and discounted attractions to festive seasonal celebrations, we’ll guide you through our recommended Portugal winter itinerary. You’ll also learn what to expect from the weather and discover the best activities across the country.
Best Things To Do In Portugal In Winter
This itinerary takes into account things you can only do in Portugal through winter, things that are better experienced with fewer crowds, or areas that have a better climate in the winter season.
Of course, all of these places can be visited year-round, so if your plans change and you decide to come some other time, don’t discount them from your itinerary!
Nazare Big Waves
Big wave season in Nazare starts in October and ends in March, but the best waves tend to happen in January/February.
Surfers from all over the world descend on Nazare throughout the winter, and when big waves have been predicted you will be able to watch them compete in various competitions below the lighthouse.
These world famous big waves pass 30m/100ft tall when there’s a big swell… and that’s no exaggeration. So be sure to check the forecast before visiting, and grab yourself a seat on the dunes just before the lighthouse.
Remember when I said Portugal is quiet in winter? Nazare is perhaps the only beach town that experiences two peak seasons: One in summer, then one whenever there’s a big wave competition on.
However, because the waves don’t act the same every day/month/year, there is often only a few days to a week’s notice whenever there is going to be a competition. This means Nazare will be quiet one week, then super busy the next but it leaves just as quick as it comes.
Fancy learning how to surf? Winter is the perfect time to take a class with Nazare surf school too! Don’t worry, they take you to a quieter part of the beach where the waves are less terrifying!
Visit Coimbra
Located just under 2 hours away, Coimbra makes a great day trip from Porto and is another of our favourite places in Portugal.
It is often overlooked by those who visit Portugal with limited time. However, since it’s home to Europe’s oldest university we believe it’s a must all year round due to the historical buildings and beautiful narrow streets that get decorated every Christmas.
Every year, Coimbra kicks off the season with a Christmas light switch on event, followed by a traditional European Christmas Market with wooden huts selling handmade gifts as well as traditional food and drink.
If you’re short on time, we highly recommend the FREE walking tour of Coimbra to help you see the city highlights.
Discover The Thermal Baths
With such a rich Roman history, it’s no surprise that Portugal is scattered with various natural thermal baths, hot pools and spa centres that make the most of Portugal’s tectonic faults and underground springs.
Some of these have been modernised to allow the public to continue using them, while others have been preserved as more of a museum-style attraction.
The most popular of Portugal ‘s thermal pools is Termas de São Pedro do Sul. This complex has a mix of museum-style old roman baths and more modern spa baths that are currently in use. Prices start at €25,00 for 60 minutes, but they also have multi-day spa stays available too, making them a great place to unwind while visiting Portugal in winter!
Next is the thermal hospital in Caldas da Rainha. There’s a lot of royal history surrounding this facility which has been everything from a school and library to a spa and even army headquarters throughout the centuries. Thermal treatments are no longer available here, but you can visit the site to see what the old baths used to look like. Hours are limited so you’ll need to check this website before going!
If you’re visiting the Azores at all, there are a lot more thermal spas and hot pools available on the islands due to their volcanic nature. You can see those options here. Please remember the Azores are not a day trip location from mainland Portugal (yes, we’ve been asked that before!)

See A Traditional Fado Show
What better way to warm up from a chilly winter’s day than with a traditional fado show with Port wine tasting?
Now, the obvious place to go for this is the city of Porto. Home to port wine, and our absolute favourite city in Portugal – maybe even Europe!
Fado is a traditional, melancholic, style of Portuguese music not dis-similar to opera but much more subtle.
True fado will tell sad stories, but more modern artists are starting to put an upbeat, more cheerful, twist to the music. A good fado show will have a good mix of both, and the performers will be really entertaining.
We really enjoyed this experience when we did it as part of our Calem port cellar tour, but you can also do it as a stand alone evening event too.
Not planning to go to Porto? That’s ok! You can experience a fado show elsewhere, although some don’t include the port:
Explore Quinta da Regaleira & Pena Palace
Make the most of the smaller crowds with a visit to Lisbon’s most popular day trip locations.
Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira are located in the famous Sintra district of Lisbon and attract hundreds of thousands of tourists each summer.
They can be so busy, in fact, that tickets have been known to sell out… but not in winter! In winter, you’ll be able to rock up at the gates, barely queue and buy your tickets on the door. Especially true for the gardens.
So why are they so special? Well, I believe the photos of Pena Palace speak for themselves. This colourful palace is what draws most of the tourists out this way. Not only is it a fantastic Instagram spot in Lisbon, but the views from up here are stunning as well.
You can choose to just visit the Palace grounds, or pay extra to enter the building and explore the well-preserved palace rooms. We actually opted not to visit Pena Palace when we visited Sintra, so we can’t give you our opinion on what it’s like there.
Quinta da Regaleira is steeped with mystery thanks to the presence of many Knights Templar ritual buildings scattered around the grounds, such as the famous reversed wells.
With no explanation to why they’re there, or what they were used for, walking down into the darkness is an eerie experience that in itself makes the entrance fee worth it.
Aside from the inverted wells, Quinta da Regaleira has a huge beautiful castle-like building as well as plenty of gardens to explore.
We visited during March one year and it almost felt like we had the place to ourselves.
Despite there still being plenty of people around, Winter is definitely the best time to visit these Lisbon tourist attractions.
Visit Batalha
The town of Batalha is where you’ll find the most important monument in Portugal: Batalha Monastery.
This monastery was commissioned to celebrate Portugal defeating the Spanish during the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385.
With its intricate gothic architecture, it’s one of the best things to do when travelling between Lisbon and Porto, but due to being part of the world heritage route for many coach tour companies, in the summer it can attract huge crowds. Particularly around lunch time.
Entrance tickets are really cheap, starting at 6 per person. You can either pre book them here, or purchase them on the day at the door.
Inside the monastery, you’ll be greeted with a great expanse of even more intricate detailing, especially in the octagon chamber where the Tomb of King John and his wife, Queen Phillipa, rest.
On a sunny day, the preserved stained glass windows cause a multitude of colours to dance along the walls.
Aside from the famous monastery, there are also hidden caves, museums and a really nice steak house amongst the best things to do in Batalha, so make sure to set aside plenty of time to explore!
Relax In The Algarve
Since so many of the beautiful spots in the Algarve will experience huge crowds, there’s no better time to visit this area than in winter!
Explore their pristine beaches, hit a hiking trail and explore the historic town centres without having to battle through crowds of other tourists.
If you’re visiting Portugal in winter with your dog, there are no beach restrictions during this time of year either so even your pup can enjoy some sand.
Look For Wild Flamingo
If you’re a nature lover, you must add this to your Portugal winter itinerary!
Every year between October and May, thousands of wild flamingos migrate to Portugal for the milder winter weather. Making it one of the best places to see these majestic birds in Europe!
Of course, they don’t stick to a schedule and sightings certainly aren’t guaranteed, but since there are so many throughout the season your chances are high!
One of the best places to see wild flamingos in Portugal include the lagoons around Aveiro. We stumbled across them on our way to Reserva Natural das Dunas de São Jacinto, where the road winds alongside the lagoon.
If a drive by look is enough for you, this road gives you plenty of opportunities for that. Especially since you’ll be driving back out the way you came in
If you’re like me, and want to watch them for a little longer, parking is limited so you’ll need to be prepared to walk a few minutes then find a way onto the beach.
Visit Evora’s And The Chapel Of Bones
Located in central Portugal, roughly 2 hours inland from Lisbon, Evora is a historical city that reaches scorching temperatures during the summer.
In the winter, however, the climate is much more bearable and makes for a great day trip from Lisbon or a side trip of its own.
The whole city of Evora is classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, due to being the best example of a city in the golden age of Portugal.
Here you’ll find well preserved Roman temples, beautiful gardens and even a Chapel of Bones, which is exactly what it sounds like: a chapel decorated in thousands of human bones.
This macabre attraction really gives you food for thought, and we think it makes the perfect addition to your Portugal winter itinerary if you’re looking to explore more of what the Alentejo region has to offer.
Just outside of Evora you’ll find the Cromlech of Almendres, which is a circular collection of Megalithic rocks that are estimated to be around 7000 years old. That’s 2000 years older than Stonehenge.
When we visited the stone circle as part of our Central Portugal road trip, they were open and free to enter but due to erosion you can now only see them from behind a fence. It’s still worth visiting though.
When Is Winter In Portugal?
Winter officially starts in December, and lasts through to March. Depending where you’re travelling from, you may find winter here to be mild and often relatively warm still, with average temperatures sitting around 12’c (53.5’f)
However, bad weather isn’t uncommon throughout winter in Portugal, with December being charted as one of the wettest months of the year for the whole country.
Although from experience, April comes in pretty close with longer lasting bouts of rain than the little-and-often pattern we sometimes see in December,
Winter In Lisbon
Weather
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, has pleasant weather through winter due to its sheltered location away from the coast.
Temperatures sit between 8 and 15’c, and rainfall is around 36 days on average across the whole winter. The majority of those (10) fall in December so if you’re wanting to limit your chance of rain during a winter visit to Lisbon, we recommend going in January or February.
Atmosphere
Lisbon experiences fewer crowds in the winter, along with cheaper prices. This is something you will experience across the country during the slow season. Accommodation is easier to book at the last minute, and you’ll often see special offers such as book one night, get one free.
Events
There are several events and celebrations that take place in Lisbon in Winter. Including the popular Wonderland Lisboa, which is the city’s main Christmas market. Running for the whole of December, it offers exactly what you’d expect from a Christmas market; boutique stalls, traditional food stands, ice skating and more!
Winter In Porto
Weather
Due to being more North than Lisbon, Porto experiences more rain and colder temperatures during winter.
That’s not to say you shouldn’t visit though. Shorter days mean you will be able to see beautiful sunsets from some of the best city view points without having to hang around into the evening, and due to the city being generally quieter, you’re more likely to have those viewpoints to yourself.
On average, Porto experiences 48 days of rain through winter, with those being evenly split through the months. If you’re adding Porto to your Portugal winter itinerary (you should) you’ll want to pack a light raincoat.
Temperatures are typically between 6 and 15’c.
Atmosphere
Just like Lisbon, Porto experiences smaller crowds, cheaper prices and more availability for accommodation. You will likely be able to grab a bargain on accommodation and tours here too!
Events
Aside from a festive Port wine tour and fado show, Porto also houses its own Christmas market each year. Well, several actually. Starting with the Christmas lights event at the end of November, there are around 6 Christmas markets in Porto throughout the month of December in various locations across the city.
A short drive south of Porto is Aveiro. A town which hosts one of the most unique winter festivals we’ve ever experienced: São Gonçalinho.
During this festival, which is hosted every January on the weekend that falls closest to the 10th, you will witness locals ascending to the top of the church to throw bread to those waiting at – yes, at not to – the bottom.
The aim is to catch it in an umbrella, net or whatever you have handy as a symbol of good luck and good fortune, but you’ll want to mind your head. The bread they use is crusty haha.
Winter In The Algarve
Weather
The Algarve is where many people head for winter sun due to its Mediterranean climate!
Temperatures are similar to that in Lisbon, sitting between 8 and 16’c.
However, they experience much less rainfall. So little, in fact, that I couldn’t find any statistics on average days of rain.
From experience of visiting the Algarve for winter sun, when they do get rain it tends to be in the evening but a very quick light spluttering.
It always felt refreshing, rather than an inconvenience.
Atmosphere
If you visit the Algarve in winter, you can expect almost empty pristine beaches but also fewer local businesses operating on normal opening times.
Many places in this area experience an extremely busy few months over the summer that they use winter as a rest period, opening sparingly if at all during the country’s low months. So you may find yourself with fewer options for tours and food. This isn’t as common in the bigger cities such as Porto and Lisbon.
Events
Aside from a spectacular NYE display, most carnivals and events start in February or March, making the majority of winter in the Algarve a true slow season for this part of Portugal.
Carnaval de Loulé is Portugal’s has been held annually in the Algarve for over 118 years, making it the oldest continuous pre-Lenten party. It attracts. It runs every year from 11th to 13th February and offers various parades filled with vibrant dancers and traditional floats.
Winter In Northern Portugal
The further north you head, the more you’re going to see green rolling hills and mountains.
That’s because the North experiences a much cooler, wetter winter when compared to the southern region.
Temperatures in the towns sit between 5 and 15’c, but you will see snow on the mountains in Portugal, as well as early morning frosts across various parts of inland northern Portugal.
On average, they experience 48 rain days across winter with 14 of those being pinned for January.
Where Is The Best Place To Spend Winter In Portugal?
For us, the best place to spend winter in Portugal is anywhere on the silver coast.
This stretches from just above Lisbon to Porto and includes our absolute favourite coastal town of Nazare.
In this area, you’ll get to experience the best of the winter weather in Portugal without having to deal with many business closures.
There’s a nice mix of things to do in this area including surfing and cultural attractions that you won’t experience in the south.
Being in the Silver Coast also gives you a good base for road tripping to other areas. If you base yourself in the Algarve, everything is going to be a long drive away.
Why Visit Portugal In Winter?
We’ve touched upon some of these reasons already, but here’s a more in depth look at why we think Portugal is worth visiting in Winter:
Fewer Crowds
We really can’t stress this enough, Portugal is much quieter during the winter and that, for us, is reason enough to visit anywhere!
With fewer crowds, you’re going to be able to experience areas in your own time without feeling rushed or pressured to move on. If you want to stand and look at a monument for a little longer, you can. Want to take another selfie with your dog, go for it.
Easier Camping
For people like us who tend to travel in a campervan, fewer crowds translates to easier camping!
The free campsites don’t tend to fill up as quickly, if at all, and overnight restrictions tend to lessen meaning you’re more likely to be able to stay by the beach without being asked to move.
Of course, parking in general is just easier in winter too. Especially in areas like Nazare.
Lower Prices
You might not believe this but many tours and accommodation providers drop their prices in winter.
One January, we stayed at Miramar Sul in Nazare for 5 nights with a full buffet breakfast each day for the same price as two nights would cost you, no breakfast, during summer.
If you’re booking directly with a company, and their website isn’t clearly displaying a winter promotion, you can ask if they have one running.
Not As Hot
Sure it might rain more, but sometimes it’s nice to be able to wander around without it being blistering hot and humid. Especially if you’re travelling with a dog!
We’ve already covered the climate for various areas of Portugal in Winter, so we won’t go over that again, but some parts of the country are far more comfortable away from the summer months: especially in the Alentejo region around Evora!
Does It Snow In Portugal?
Many are surprised to find out that yes, it does snow in Portugal!
The Serra De Estrela, Portugal’s highest mountain range in central Portugal, is home to Portugal’s only ski resort, with the best skiing happening through January and February.
However, it’s not recommended to plan a trip to Portugal specifically for skiing as the snow is becoming increasingly less predictable.
There are a couple of other areas where you might be lucky enough to see snow but it’s not guaranteed.
Snow in Lisbon or Porto is extremely rare.
We hope this itinerary has helped you see that Portugal can be a great winter destination if you’re looking for sunny days without the crowds. If you have any questions at all, or would like to share your own tip tricks, join our Facebook group!
