Living in a van doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your fitness routine. In fact, staying fit while traveling is not only possible but can actually be a lot of fun.
As someone who’s always been into fitness, whether through weightlifting, yoga, or just staying active, I’ve learned how to stay in shape even when your living space is tiny.
Disclaimer: I’m not a certified fitness expert, just someone who’s lived the van life and stayed fit for years. These van life fitness tips are based on personal experience, and while they’ve worked for me, they may or may not work for you.

1. Stay Active Every Day (Even on “Rest” Days)
When you’re living in a van, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you need to have a gym session to stay fit. But here’s the truth: van life fitness is all about movement, and you can get a great workout without hitting the gym.
On days I’m not lifting or doing intense training, I make it a point to stay active with things like:
- 45–60 minute brisk walks (often around a park circuit or up a hill)
- Yoga and stretching (I’m over 6ft tall – living in a cramped van can do a number on your body)
- Foam rolling to loosen up tight muscles
It might sound simple, but the benefits are huge. Even if I don’t feel like working out, just getting the blood flowing first thing in the morning helps set the tone for a productive day. Plus, it keeps my body healthy and injury-free!
Why It Works for Van Life:
You don’t need a ton of space for a walk, yoga, or stretching session. And it’s a great way to explore new spots while staying fit on the road.
2. Make Use of Free Gym Equipment
Living on the road doesn’t mean you can’t get fit on the road.
Free outdoor gyms are popping up in many parks, beaches, and recreational areas around the world. And if you can’t find one, there are plenty of natural resources to turn into gym equipment, like sturdy tree branches for pull-ups or park benches for step-ups.
Here’s the basic gear I always carry with me:
- Skipping rope – Perfect for cardio.
- Resistance bands – Great for strength training and stretching.
- Foam roller – Helps with recovery and mobility.
- Good running shoes – Comfortable for walking, running, or hiking.
And remember: your own bodyweight can be your best gym equipment. Pull-ups, push-ups, squats—you can do them anywhere.
Pro Tip: Want a challenge? Go to a local outdoor gym at sunrise when it’s less crowded. Plus, there’s no waiting for equipment!
3. Sign Up for a Nationwide Gym Membership
When living in a van, finding places to shower and work out can be tricky. But a countrywide gym membership can solve both problems!
For about $20 a month, you’ll have access to gym facilities and showers wherever you are.
We signed up for VirginActive, and even though it’s a bit pricier, the quality is unbeatable. Clean, well-maintained gyms, access to pools, and even Wi-Fi – a van-lifer’s dream!
Benefits for Van Lifers:
- Access to clean showers (which is a luxury when you’re living on the road)
- Gyms everywhere – no need to sign up each time you move.
- Some gyms even have swimming pools, which is great for low-impact cardio.
If you’re on the move in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, or the UK, here are some great gym chains that offer multiple locations and flexible memberships:
- PureGym (UK, Denmark, and expanding)
- Fitness First (Multiple European countries)
- Anytime Fitness (Global, 24-hour access)
- Goodlife Health Clubs (Australia-wide)
- Les Mills (New Zealand, offering awesome group classes)
These gyms are perfect for van lifers looking for consistency and ease. And trust me, it’s cheaper and cleaner than spending your day searching for public showers!
4. Make Swimming a Regular Activity
If you want to stay fit while traveling, swimming is one of the best forms of exercise. It’s a full-body workout that’s easy on your joints, making it perfect for anyone – especially if you’re on the move a lot. Whether it’s a river, beach, or indoor pool, there’s no shortage of places to swim.
For me, swimming is more than just a workout—it’s an opportunity to explore nature. Imagine swimming in crystal-clear rivers, lakes, or oceans while traveling around.
Why It’s Great for Van Life:
- Free or low-cost access to swimming spots (beaches, rivers, lakes).
- No gym equipment needed – just your swimwear.
- Great cardio without the impact on your body.
5. Meditate and Take Care of Your Mind
Many people don’t associate meditation with fitness, but if you’re serious about staying fit, mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness. Meditation helps improve your posture, breathing, and stress management – all key components of staying in shape.
For van lifers, meditation is easy to practice since you already have a private space (your van!). Whether you use headphones to block out noise or just focus on your breath, it’s an easy way to recharge.
That’s it for now, folks! Staying fit while living in a van isn’t as hard as it seems. It’s all about getting creative, staying consistent, and making time for both your body and mind. Fitness should be part of the journey, not just a destination.
Remember, if I can make it work on the road, so can you. Whether you’re exploring the open road or just trying to find balance in a small space, the key is to keep moving. So, get out there, try something new, and don’t let life in a van slow you down.
